Five Montessori activities you can set up at home this week

You don't need special equipment. Most Montessori practical life work uses things already in your kitchen.
1. Real pouring
A small jug of water and two cups on a tray. Add a sponge so your child can clean up their own spills — that part is the lesson, not the mess.
2. A low, reachable snack shelf
One shelf in the fridge or pantry with prepared snacks and a water jug lets a child serve themselves and make a real decision several times a day.
3. Sorting and matching
Pairing socks, sorting cutlery or matching lids to containers builds classification skills and takes no preparation.
4. Care of the environment
A child-sized dustpan, cloth or watering can turns household jobs into genuinely satisfying work.
5. Naming the real world
Use precise words for real objects — eucalyptus rather than tree, whisk rather than thing. Rich vocabulary grows fastest through everyday conversation.
